A tête de l'orchestre qui est considéré, à l'époque, et
depuis longtemps déjà, comme le plus prestigieux du monde, Herbert von Karajan
peut se considérer comme l'héritier de la plus grande tradition allemande de
direction orchestrale (Richard Wagner, Hans von Bülow, Arthur
Nikischet Wilhelm Furtwängler). La qualité de l'orchestre
est telle que Karajan confia une fois à ses nouveaux musiciens qu’« il
avait l'impression de s'appuyer contre un mur épais lorsqu’il les
dirigeait »
